Rollerblading - what you need to know

Rollerblading has been a popular activity for decades, eclipsing the old 2x2 rollerskate setup from years gone by. They’re very popular in the summer, and you can take them just about anywhere with the right planning. So if you’re a beginner, what do you need to know?

Most importantly, you’ll want to make sure the skates fit properly. If they are too tight or too loose, you’ll have different sets of problems that will make skating difficult and could cause injuries. Most sporting goods stores will have someone who can help you find the best fit. Depending on your experience level, it’s also probably worthwhile to get a helmet and/or pads for your elbows and knees.

If you’ve done ice skating or rollerskating before, the transition to rollerblading is rather natural. If you’re starting from scratch, the learning curve will be more significant, but it’s not too daunting. Start first on carpet, so that you can stand and get used to the balance of standing with skates. Progressively, you can move onto concrete and learn to push with each foot while maintaining your balance. Don’t worry if you fall! It’s a totally normal part of the learning process.

Once you get the hang of it in a small area, make sure you learn how to brake. This will be critical once you go out into the larger world with your skates. Finally, make sure you practice regularly! Like any skill, rollerblading can be tricky at first but gets more enjoyable the more you do it.
